Most traders spend hours picking entries. They spend almost no time deciding how much to risk. That's backwards. Entry quality matters far less than most people think. How you size your positions determines whether you survive long enough to see your edge play out.
This post covers the R-multiple framework — what it is, how it works, and how we apply it inside Trade Forge's algorithmic trading signals system.

What Is an R-Multiple?
An R-multiple (how much you made or lost relative to what you risked — the only number that matters when comparing trades across different pairs and timeframes) strips out the noise of dollar figures.
Here's the idea. Before entering a trade, you define your risk. Say you'll risk $100 on a EUR/USD setup. That $100 is "1R." If the trade hits your target and returns $250, you made 2.5R. If it stops out, you lost 1R. That's it.
Why does this matter? Because it makes every trade comparable. A $50 profit on a crypto scalp and a $50 profit on a gold swing trade mean nothing in isolation. But 2R vs. 0.4R tells you everything about the quality of those outcomes relative to what was risked.

The Math Behind Expectancy
Once you're thinking in R-multiples, you can calculate expectancy. Expectancy tells you how much you expect to make per 1R risked, averaged across many trades.
The formula:
Expectancy = (Win Rate × Average Win in R) − (Loss Rate × Average Loss in R)
A simple example:
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Win rate | 45% |
| Average win | 2.2R |
| Loss rate | 55% |
| Average loss | 1R |
| Expectancy | +0.44R per trade |
A system with 45% win rate is still strongly profitable if winners are consistently larger than losers. This is why chasing high win rates is a trap. A 70% win rate with average wins of 0.6R and average losses of 1R has negative expectancy. You're losing money while feeling like you're winning most of the time.

How We Apply R-Multiples at Trade Forge
Every signal we publish includes a defined entry, stop loss, and one or more take profit levels. That structure isn't decorative. It's what makes R-multiple tracking possible.
When a signal fires, the distance from entry to stop defines 1R for that trade. Our models size targets based on market structure, volatility regime, and session timing — not arbitrary round numbers.
We track every signal outcome against its R-multiple projection. Our calibration engine retrains weekly on 2,400+ live signals, which means our target projections are continuously tested against reality, not just historical backtests.
One specific finding: in our live data, signals with projected R-multiples above 3R had a notably lower realisation rate than signals projected between 1.5R and 2.5R. Ambitious targets sound appealing. They close less often. We weight our signal mix accordingly.

Fixed Fractional Sizing: Putting R to Work
Knowing your R-multiple framework is only useful if you're applying consistent position sizing. The standard approach is fixed fractional sizing — risking a fixed percentage of your account on each trade.
Common guidance is 1–2% per trade. The math compounds in your favour when you combine fixed fractional sizing with positive expectancy.
Here's what that looks like across three signal styles we publish:
| Signal Style | Typical Hold Time | Avg Target (R) | Typical Win Rate* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scalp | Minutes to 2 hours | 1.2R–1.5R | 52–58% |
| Day trade | 2–12 hours | 1.8R–2.5R | 47–54% |
| Swing | Days to weeks | 2.5R–4R | 38–46% |
*These are illustrative ranges from our live signal data. Past performance is not indicative of future results.
Notice that win rate decreases as target size increases. That's expected and mathematically coherent. You don't need a 60% win rate on swing trades. You need consistent execution and patience.

Who Doesn't Need This
If you're a long-term investor putting money into index ETFs every month, this framework isn't relevant to your approach. You're not managing active risk on individual trade entries. Position sizing for passive investing is a different conversation entirely.
If you're paper trading and haven't committed real capital yet, understanding R-multiples is valuable preparation — but applying them rigorously comes later.
This framework is built for active traders: people executing multiple signals per week across forex, crypto, commodities, or indices. If that's you, this is foundational.

The Mistake Almost Everyone Makes
Hot take: most retail traders destroy good signal systems by ignoring position sizing entirely.
A forex signals provider (or an algorithmic trading signals system like ours) can have genuine positive expectancy over hundreds of trades. But if you're betting 10% of your account on a "high conviction" scalp and 0.5% on a swing trade, you've disconnected your sizing from your system. You're not trading the edge. You're gambling with selective confidence.
Consistent 1–2% risk per signal, every signal. That's the discipline that lets compounding work.

FAQ
Q: Can I use R-multiples with any forex signal provider?
Yes, as long as the signals include a clearly defined stop loss. Without a stop, you can't calculate 1R, and the whole framework breaks down. If your signal provider doesn't publish stops, that's a problem worth taking seriously.
Q: What's a good expectancy target for a signal system?
Anything consistently above +0.3R per trade across 100+ signals is meaningful. Below that, you're within the noise. We publish our live expectancy figures at tradingforge.io.
Q: Does R-multiple sizing work for crypto as well as forex?
Yes. We apply the same framework across all asset classes — forex (24 pairs), crypto, commodities, indices, and ETFs. Volatility profiles differ, but the R-multiple logic is universal.
Q: Is there a minimum account size to apply this properly?
With 1R fixed at 1–2% of account, you need enough capital that your position sizes are executable (above broker minimums). For most retail brokers, $500–$1,000 is a workable starting floor. Smaller than that and the math gets squeaky.
