WHAT HAPPENS TO SIGNALS DURING HIGH-IMPACT NEWS EVENTS

· Trade Forge

News events break things. Spreads widen. Liquidity vanishes. Models trained on "normal" market conditions suddenly face a completely different environment. If you're using forex signals — or any algorithmic trading signals — during events like NFP, CPI, or FOMC announcements, you need to understand what's actually happening under the hood.

This isn't a "news trading is risky, be careful" post. We're going to walk through the mechanics: how models degrade, what our system does about it, and where the failure points are.

---

Why News Events Break Algorithmic Models

Most signal models are trained on historical price data. That data has a statistical distribution — average spread, average volatility, average slippage. High-impact news events sit far outside that distribution.

When the US Consumer Price Index (CPI — a measure of inflation that markets respond to violently) prints 40 basis points above expectation, the following things happen almost simultaneously:

A model that learned "when price does X, do Y" never saw this version of X. It's not wrong — it's just operating outside its training domain.

The Three Ways Signals Fail During News

1. Entry fills at bad prices

Your signal fires. Spread is 1.2 pips in normal conditions. At the moment of entry, it's 8 pips. You're already down before the trade begins. The signal's expected value — calculated assuming a 1.2-pip spread — no longer applies.

2. Stops get hunted aggressively

News events create sharp, fast spikes that frequently pierce stop levels before reversing. The underlying signal thesis may be correct. The trade still closes at a loss.

3. Volatility regime mismatch

Signal logic calibrated for low-volatility sessions behaves unpredictably in high-volatility regimes (distinct market states where average price movement is significantly different). A stop placement designed for 40-pip daily range is structurally wrong during a 180-pip news candle.

What Our System Does About It

We're not discretionary traders. We don't sit at a desk deciding whether today's NFP "feels too uncertain." Our system handles this through rules, not instinct.

Here's how our news filter works in practice:

Pre-event suppression window: We maintain a live economic calendar feed. For Tier 1 events (NFP, FOMC rate decisions, CPI, GDP), our signal engine enters a suppression window — typically 15 minutes before and 30 minutes after the event. No new signals fire during this window for affected pairs.

Volatility regime check: Even outside suppression windows, we run a real-time ATR (Average True Range — a measure of how much a pair is moving) check. If current short-term ATR exceeds 2.2x the rolling 20-session baseline, signals for that pair are held until volatility normalises.

Spread monitoring: Our system polls live spread data. If spread exceeds a pair-specific threshold, signals are withheld even if all other conditions are met.

In our live data, applying these three filters reduced news-adjacent signal failures by 61% compared to our unfiltered baseline. That's not a backtest figure. That's measured against 2,400+ live signals across a 12-month period.

When This Doesn't Apply to You

If you're a swing trader holding positions for days or weeks, most of this is lower priority. A single news event rarely derails a well-structured multi-day thesis with appropriate position sizing.

If you're using signals as general market education rather than live execution, the mechanics of news suppression don't affect you at all.

This section matters most to scalp and intraday day trade signal users. Those are the styles where news events cause the most structural damage to signal integrity — because the holding period is short and the entry price matters enormously.

Comparing Signal Behaviour Across Event Types

Different news events create different types of market disruption. Here's how we categorise them internally:

Event Type Typical Spread Spike Suppression Window Signal Impact
NFP (Non-Farm Payrolls) 6–12x normal 15 min before / 45 min after High — all USD pairs suppressed
FOMC Rate Decision 4–8x normal 30 min before / 60 min after Very high — broad USD volatility
CPI / Core CPI 5–10x normal 15 min before / 30 min after High — USD and index pairs
PMI / ISM Data 2–4x normal 10 min before / 15 min after Moderate — pair-specific
Central bank speeches Variable Monitored, not suppressed Low — slower-moving impact

These windows aren't arbitrary. They're derived from measuring how long it takes for spread and ATR to return to baseline across 18 months of event data.

The Honest Take

Most signal providers don't publish what happens to their signals around news events. They filter it out of the performance stats or just don't track it. That IS the answer — the signals fail and they'd rather you not know.

We track every signal against the live economic calendar. If a signal fired inside a news window that slipped through our filter, that loss is in our numbers. We don't scrub it.

FAQ

Should I manually avoid trading my signals during news events?

If you're on our free tier (which has a short delay on signal delivery), yes — some delayed signals may arrive right inside a news window. Check the economic calendar before executing. VIP signals include the news filter at the system level.

Does this apply to crypto signals too?

Partially. Crypto doesn't follow the same economic calendar, but it's highly correlated to US macro surprises (particularly FOMC decisions). Our crypto signal engine uses a cross-asset volatility check rather than a calendar-based filter.

What's the best forex signals approach for news weeks?

For any algorithmic trading signals provider worth using, transparency about news handling is table stakes. Ask them directly: what happens to your signals during NFP? If they can't answer specifically, that tells you everything.

Does Trade Forge ever trade through news events intentionally?

Occasionally, for swing signals with wide stops and long target horizons where the news event is unlikely to close the position. But this is the exception, not the default.
